In a music scene dominated by guitars and metal, electronic music is almost a rarity with a very small market. Juuso Malin is one of the most active representatives of Finnish electronic music. With the alias of Kimarr, he has been an electro DJ and producer and has collaborated with the emcee Tommishock. He also hosts a radio show at Bassoradio every second Friday. KA SO RE is his latest project and delivers electronic dance music. The advance EP is already in the shops and soon a debul album will follow.
What does this new project add to your career?
It is pretty different from Kimarr??Kimarr is/was my alter ego for Hip hop influenced electronic music. Times change and I wanted to do something new under different alias. I’m not sure what’s going to happen with Kimarr.
Can you tell about your influences and favourite artists?
My influences come from new and old music, mostly pop, new wave and electronic. Currently I’ve listened a lot of Sparks, Yellow Magic Orchestra and X-ray Spex.
Why to call the ep PETITE?
It has something to do with little girls.
How did you get interested in electronic music?
I heard The Prodigy’s first album and that was it. Then I started to explore all the depths and sub-genres of techno, electro and house. Somewhere in time I fell in love with Hip hop and was too true with it and blocked everything else. But now there’s good harmony with everything.
Where to go in Helsinki to enjoy good electronic music?>
Redrum, Kuudes Linja and Nolla. Keep your eye on clubs like Top Billin, Misf*ts, Now, Bum Bum and Sim City.
Finland is very rock / metal oriented. For example, many big summer festivals hardly have room for electronic music, how to find the right audience for your music?
I love rock, but I hate the scene in Finland. Music without guitars and acoustic drums doesn’t fit in quite well here, but I’ve been blessed with good venues and lovely audience.
Are your planning to focus on KA SO RE more than in other projects? Are you planning to release a full-length album?
Yes, I’m focused 100% on KA SO RE. I’m currently making my debut album, but I have to find my focus on the direction of what KA SO RE will represent in future. We’ll see.
