The Friend – New Berlin Wall

From the label that brought us the fresh sounds of Pintandwefall, I Was A Teenage Satan Worshipper and more recently, French Films comes a new act to join the wave of new Finnish indie music. The Friend plays melodic indie rock music to make people dance, or in their own words “songs that are brisk, atmospheric, playful, three-and-a-half-minutes-long compact packages”. The band just released their first single, New Berlin Wall, although we will have to wait until February to listen to their debut full-length, Athletic Girls. Enjoy after the break this first installment of The Friend’s music. More

Big Wave Riders – Big Sound

It is somehow scary how fast musicians get together, form a band and send their music to the world in a matter of days. But at the same time, it is a tremendous joy to have something new every day. Today’s band, Big Wave Riders, started just before the summer, but it sounds pretty solid and is already creating some buzz in the Helsinki indie scene. They feature some fast beats, a little bit of garage, some playful electronica and a charismatic singer. You might think of other fast newcomers like Surfer Blood when you hear them. Listen to one of their song after the break and one more on their MySpace page. An EP is already in the works so we are pretty sure you will read about them often.

Satellite Stories – Mexico

Some young lads from Oulu hit recently our mailbox with a bunch of refreshing self-produced pop songs. Satellite Stories is an indie quartet with the mission, according to their own words, of bringing you nostalgia from events that you never really experienced, like the 60s, first kiss from your elementary school crush and the time you and your best friend bought that awesome 45-single and listened it from your parents record player. Even though, they do not play any synths, the songs have the fancy danceable groove of electronic music. Click to listen the song Mexico.

Rubik – Goji Berries

Rubik is slowly becoming the most international Finnish band, at least when it comes to the indie scene. Dada Bandits, their second album, was released in Finland a year ago already, but it keeps on being released in different countries while the band tours around the world and collects good reviews. Let us go back to Dada Bandits once again with a very special live version of the song Goji Berries filmed at the Botanical Garden in Oslo for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation. Watch it right after the break.

Kaskas – Grandmother Weaves

Sometimes a great song do not need epic arrangements or an intricate composition, but just a good melody can do the trick. This is exactly what Kaskas achieves with a soft and groovy pop: a great simple song. This indie quartet from Helsinki is soon releasing their first album with the title of In the Meantime, and you can download it for free from their MySpace page come 29 April. But in the meantime, you can hear after the break one song off it. According to what we have been able to hear of the album, it promises to be a very enjoyable effort. Do not miss it. More
